Continuing with the recent trend of posting songs that are different from your run of the mill radio tracks, I’ve got a track with an Indian flair and a name that I can’t pronounce, ‘Oro Se Do Bheatha Bhaile’. Go ahead and give that one a shot. No matter how poorly you pronounce it, it’s better than my shot at it. Read the rest of this entry »

Do you hear that… Off in the distance…. It’s the sound of the rare and wild guitar solo. It’s running free and untamed. But alas, this fine creature, it seems, is almost extinct. But a few mainstream musicians are doing their part to preserve this beast, and you might be surprised at who I’m talking about. I have a confession to make. A confession that has ridden with me since the days of ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’. I must confess before any more words begin to spill, that I was indeed a fan of 80’s metal. Yes, hair metal. Oh yes, glam rock. My confession can also include the fact that my favorite guilty pleasure of the 21st century consists of spinning a few glam rock albums every now and again, rolling with the wail of the guitar and screaming out the lyrics with any of the long, blond-haired front men of the day. Do I miss those days? Yeah, a little. Okay, sometimes a lot…even though only one of my favorite all-time artists came from that period of music. Read the rest of this entry »

Behold, the voice of an angel. Rebeka Reed has one one the smoothest, most mind-capturingly beautiful voices to grace our humble site. This is one track that I’m really excited about presenting to you. ‘Pharoah’s Daughter’ is acoustic pop perfection. It’s one of the very rare tracks that I hear that I would not change a thing about. The production is outstanding, the lyrics are thoughtful, the hook is tight and the harmonies… oh man, the harmonies. They absolutely make the song. Read the rest of this entry »

Modern rock with the bluster and swagger of classic rock is how I’d describe ‘Hypnotized’ from Icares. It’s got the polish, heaviness and angst that encompasses the sound of modern rock radio, but it also sports riffage that evokes 70’s and 80’s era hard rock and a sound big enough to fill any arena. Icares may not be treading any new ground, but they do a fantastic job of merging the best of old school rock and new contemporary radio-ready rock.

It’s a momentous occasion. I’ve just purchased my second mp3 player. Why is this momentous you ask? Well, because I’m predominantly cheap. And mp3 players are predominantly not. I also already have an mp3 player which is ancient in terms of mp3 units, but still works just fine. It’s the Archos Studio 20. It weighs about 20 pounds (at least it seems to) and it has a two line display like something off of a calculator. However, it also uses a regular old laptop hard drive, so I’ve removed the 20 gigabyte one that came with it and replaced it with a 120 gigabyte drive. Eat that iPod owners! I scoff at your measly drives! My Archos holds practically every song I’ve ever heard, and it sounds good. Admit it… you have drive envy now. I don’t blame you. Read the rest of this entry »

Close your eyes and picture yourself laying in an open grassy field on a beautiful spring day. The skies is jewel-tone blue and filled with fluffy white clouds. Now hit play and take in Craig Lyons’ “Improvise”. It’s practically a soundtrack for beautiful spring days. Read the rest of this entry »

In the immortal words of the geniuses known as Monty Python, ‘and now for something completely different’. Most of you are not going to like this probably, but I think this song is AWESOME! The band known as GypsyFoot are dishing out their track called “Victoria’s Waltz”. It’s got a great feel to it which makes me smile as soon as I hear it. And it’s so well put together that I’m in awe. The band it super tight and they are very talented musicians. As for the sound… well… hmmm. I think you’re just going to have to listen to it. I don’t really know how to describe it except as ‘Pirate Music’. So there you have it, we’ve just spawned a new genre…. pirate-core. Read the rest of this entry »

SXSW or South-By-Southwest is not just any normal music festival. It’s THE music pilgrimage that artists, labels and anyone that wants to be involved in the music biz makes each and every year. It’s the one place where you can catch every buzz-worthy, buzz-unworthy and buzz-hopeful act all together in one place doing their thing. It’s a literal music smorgasbord where you can gorge on all the new music you can stand. Read the rest of this entry »

If you think Tagine sounds similar to the mid-West group known as Flavor, then Vanna, show them what we have behind Door #2. Tagine is indeed the same ole Flavor just on a new label (Bluhammock) with a new name. Same great music, same great musicians. Read the rest of this entry » |
