Looks like it’s time to tempt you with a little dark down-tempo electronica and to fill that order we’ve got some Teargas And Plateglass. The track is called ‘A Book Of Black Valentines’ and it’s got some really sick beats along with one of the hardest sounding snare drums I’ve ever heard. Think John Bonham on steroids. It’s sweet. Anyway, the track has a very goth feel to it, so you may find yourself fighting the urge to break out the black eyeliner, all-black wardrobe and the

Tenneseein’ is Tennebelievin’. A friend once told me that the difference between a good band and a great one is the ability to take what you can from you influences and move on, without trying to emulate them. Knoxville based Athame has done just that, and written one damn fine track, Backout, from their EP Reductive Process. Read the rest of this entry »

Once again we’re bringing you another one of those artists that leave you scratching your head wondering, “Where the hell have THESE guys been hiding?” This time it’s a band called Betablokka and this pop-rock gem is called ‘In And Out And Away’. With great lyrics, some great production and a hook that will leave you humming this song for days, you know within 30 seconds of this song that these guys have the potential to be huge. ‘Last In The Line Of A Fortunate Few’ is a sweet soft piece of heartache from The All Golden. As the acoustic guitar keeps the main structure of the song, synths wash in and out of the soundscape making for a beautiful piece that is rich and lush. But the strength of this song lies in the songwriting. The melodies are strong and keep you locked into the song. A perfect song for those rainy days when everything in the world seems wrong.

Okay, first off, yes it sounds like Evanescence. Now that we got that out of the way, forget that you ever heard of them. Then listen to this track. It’s much better than anything Evanescence has done. After that, you will think of them as a cheap imitation of Damsel Fly who craft a much stronger song. Read the rest of this entry »

Here is something different for the electronica fans here. How about some live drums? That is the first thing that grabbed me about ‘Scenic’ by Fascia. It’s an electronic track that uses all acoustic drums and believe me, it sounds very different. That raw and unprocessed sound really gives the track a unique flavor. Once you get past the acoustic drums then you can settle back into a nice groove that really flows. Breaks abound and the synths fill in the depth to keep the song interesting, but it’s all about that groove. ‘Scenic’ has a chilled-out flavor to it that you can kick back, close you eyes and lose yourself in. It’s one of those rare tracks that comands that you stop what you are doing and listen. And when you listen to ti, you realize that it’s pure simplicity. No overwrought, overlayered hyper-kinetic sections where 9 instruments are all playing a different melody. Nope, the focus of ‘Scenic’ is pure simplicity…. and those drums. To quote Oliver Twist, “Please sir, I want some more”.

Switchyard is a band hailing out of LA who reminds me a little of ‘Sixpence None The Richer’, only not quite so saccharine. The thing that really grabbed me first off about ‘Virgins’ was the stunning harmonies that the song has. It’s more of a storytelling-type track that doesn’t have much of a chorus to speak of. So instead of writing a hook to make the song grab you, they just decided to make the entire song grab you. And through the use of those harmonies, I’d say they succeeded. Oh man has this song got a great chorus! Now don’t get me wrong, ‘We’re All Alcoholics’ from Rob Szabo. This song is really killer from start to finish, and it shows the skills of someone who is obviously an incredibly talented songwriter. So I started kicking back listening to this song thinking, “Hey, here we go. This is a good song.” Then came the chorus. Immediately, I thought, “Whoa! No this is a GREAT song.” Then, Right-clickety… ‘Save As…’ and dropped it directly into my music collection before the second verse even got started. So that should be a testament to what I think of this song. So there you have it. Don’t check out this amazing track from Rob unless you have about 5mb of free space in your music collection, because this is one you will want to add to it permanently. |
