‘Into The Summer’ by The Screwdrivers makes me recall the band Dada. They both have the knack for creating acoustic pop songs that just ooze melody yet still sport odd rhythms and instrumental creativity. The harmonies, sealed the deal. Yep, these guys have the goods. A whole host of names come to mind when you first hear ‘Now’ by Caleb Engstrom. It sounds a little like Coldplay, Pete Yorn and even a little Sting thrown in there minus all the new-agey tantric crap. What it does have is a somber soul-bearing quality that is most appealing. ‘Such Great Heights’ from the Postal Service is a very unique blend of indie rock and electronica. It’s what happens when you take an indie rock guy-(Ben Gibbard of Death Cab For Cutie) with an electronica guy(Jimmy Tamborello of Dntel) lock ‘em away in a studio. They create one of the most interesting pieces of pop music that you have heard in a very long time. OK, ‘Ugly To Beatiful’ is from Aquilina. They have tons o’ talent and can obviously craft a killer song. It’s got a little bit of a celtic feel to it which really gives the track it’s unique flavor. But it also has a very strong chorus and some great musicianship that fills out the song. Read the rest of this entry »
