“Keep it gully dunn!” Yeah, I think that phrase personifies what Blackmobb has going on. If you’re not familiar with them, they’re a duo with origins in the Boogie Down whose “straight-up, no chaser” hip-hop styles have taken them to LA, the UK and beyond. They seem to have assembled a worldwide team behind their effort yet that hasn’t diluted the focus of their music which is hardcore and street in a way that can only be done by cats from New York.

“Live On” struck me as a juxtaposition of the somberness of the things we feel we have to do to stay up against the joy and good feelings of the things we can enjoy afterwards because we did the dirty work. I would say it expresses a sort of “Yin and Yang” philosophy of street living but you might think I was a fruitcake if I said that so I just won’t say it! (Okay so you already think I’m a fruitcake, whatever!) The rhymes let the world know that in the streets a human (and Blackmobb in particular) can get as grimy as is necessary in any situation. At the same time, in my opinion (yeah me, remember the fruitcake guy?), the track and hook let us know that while you’re here you might as well enjoy yourself.

Of course I could be way off base on that interpretation but then again it IS MY review. The track is bouncy. I could see this joint getting played at any club or party worldwide. The beat just has that “Shake Ya Ass…Watch Yo’self!” feeling but the lyrics quickly let you know that there’s another side to this “life” thing besides big butts in tight jeans. Blackmobb is “living on” and they’re bringing in 2004 with even more new material for their growing fan base. They dropped an LP in the fall of 2003 and have obviously been staying busy since so don’t sleep. Now…while you check these guys out I’m going to do a little more research on the “big butts in tight jeans” side of life…
