Afroganic are trying to do something that really pushes the boundaries of electronic and world music simultaneously. They goal of the group is to blend tribal African rhythms with more traditional electronica and house music. I can hear you already… “That’s all fine and well, but is it any good?!?” It’s not just good, it’s freakin’ fantastic!

There have been a few other artists who have tried something similar. Afro Celt Sound System comes immediately to mind, which added a Celtic flavor to the equation. And I did enjoy some of Afro Celt’s stuff, but none of it as much as I dug ‘Ma Angro So’.

I heard this one while going through some music one morning. I was half asleep and the songs were just kind of scrolling by. Then this one come across my trusty Archos Jukebox and I was snapped wide awake. Nothing like coming across a song with a sound that’s new and fresh to get the ol’ blood flowing.

Now get ready for this. There are no synthesizers, drum machines or computer-enhanced sounds. Now I’ve spent many years playing synths and keys and I love a good Roland 909 as much as the next guy, but you can’t deny the effect that the use of all “organic” instruments has on this track. It completes the flavor and brings out all that makes these guys special.

Now what really drives the track for me is the killer vocal track. The rhythmic delivery fills out the track perfectly and seems to be the thing that keeps me reaching for this one over and over.

So go ahead and check out something new and exciting. In this day and age it’s getting harder and harder to come by. So it makes it that much more special when an artist like Afroganic comes along.
